Growing a Farmer Thoughts 2

Although I have not enjoyed every aspect of this book as a whole I appreciate its simplicity and what it was able to teach me about food production. While I live in world where farm to table is the latest fad, I had never really given much thought to what that looked like. I expected that the farms in which my food came from to all be much like the ones I pass on my way up the Grape Vine to Northern California. Rows and rows of hypnotically perfect crops with a perfect amount of sun and water all growing with no problems. This however is not the reality. The “Slaughter” chap was particularly impactful because it made me think more closely about the way in which I think about the meat that I consume. I try not to think about where the chicken may have come from, because I think it is too gruesome to think about. However, this is a problem! Job Experience

My Experience at the Discovery Channel I am a Marketing Strategy intern for the Discovery Channel. While marketing strategy as a profession has many components, the best way I can describe it is the intersection of business and creativity. I find that this intersection uses both my right and left brain and I like the challenge. My days in the office are always different and I am never bored. As a graduating senior, I often worry about failure and how my next endeavor, post-graduation, will define me as a person. I find comfort in the fact that Kurt was able to not only change his profession at a later stage in life, but also learn from his failures in a productive manner. While some chapters are slightly frustrating to read because it seems as though it takes Kurt far longer than it should to find resolution, he eventually learns something from all his failures which I admire. Although there are times when I find the book to be slightly tedious I also enjoy the simplicity of it. While a whole chapter on bee keeping seemed annoying and pointless at first, it did cause me to take a closer look at the honey I consume. I am a big fan of drinking chamomile tea before bed (often while I am reading a chapter or two of the book) ...
