Growing a Farmer Thoughts
Growing a Farmer Thoughts
So far, I
have really enjoyed Growing a Farmer and
find comedy in Kurt’s various failures. As a graduating senior, I often worry
about failure and how my next endeavor, post-graduation, will define me as a
person. I find comfort in the fact that Kurt was able to not only change his
profession at a later stage in life, but also learn from his failures in a
productive manner. While some chapters are slightly frustrating to read because
it seems as though it takes Kurt far longer than it should to find resolution,
he eventually learns something from all his failures which I admire.
Although there
are times when I find the book to be slightly tedious I also enjoy the
simplicity of it. While a whole chapter on bee keeping seemed annoying and
pointless at first, it did cause me to take a closer look at the honey I
consume. I am a big fan of drinking chamomile tea before bed (often while I am
reading a chapter or two of the book) and I always add honey to it. After
reading the chapter on Kurt’s beekeeping adventures I went to the USC farmer’s
market and struck up a conversation with the woman running a honey booth. As she
excitedly explained the different types of honey she was selling and how they
were all unique, I pictured Kurt and his bees. If it were not for reading this
seemingly pointless chapter I would have never considered the benefits of
buying local honey or given a second thought to the honey that I was consuming
and that’s the point of this book, right?
Hey, I also agree that the bee keeping was frustrating to read because of the amount of bees he wasted for the little amount of honey he collected. I also take comfort in the fact that I can switch careers later in my life.
ReplyDeleteI really feel that the concept of learning from your mistakes is really central and important. I think it can be applied to every stage of our life in order to always improve.
