The Powers of Matcha

Matcha vs. Coffee

Do you love the pick me up of coffee but hate the crash? What if I told you there was a solution to that three o’clock slump?! Well, I have the answer for you! Matcha!! This magical green liquid has the same power and caffeine content as coffee but with a more steady and consistent caffeine release which means no harsh crashes. Thanks to the amino acid L-Theanine which slows the release of the caffeine, matcha is known to have a long lasting and calming effect. Matcha also contains lots of antioxidants and vitamins that are not found in coffee which adds to the magic power of this green superfood.

What is matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from whole Japanese green tea leaves. Unlike other teas in which you steep the tea leaves in hot water to extract the flavor, matcha powder contains the entire tea leaf, leaving none of the good stuff and flavor behind. As mentioned previously matcha powder contains a ton of antioxidants and one cup of matcha has the antioxidant power of ten cups of green tea! Woah! Antioxidants are really beneficial and help prevent the oxidation of other molecules in the body, which improves aging as well as helps fight cancer molecules.

Types of matcha

Not all matcha is created equal, so don’t be fooled by sugary substitutes that claim to have the same benefits as the real deal. When looking for matcha powder, make sure to pay attention to the contents as well as the country of origin. Good quality matcha powder should only contain green tea leaves and generally comes from Japan. While there are some more locally sourced alternatives to Japanese matcha you will still want to make sure that the only ingredient is the green tea leaf! Another way to check the quality of the matcha is by the color! The more vibrant and green the better! With the greener color also comes a higher price tag so as long as you are in the good and above range you are getting all of the good benefits of matcha.

If you have never tried matcha why not give it a try! You may be surprised at how good it will make you feel!

  1. I have always loved Matcha so I had a great time reading more about the positive effects of the drink. If you have not tried the iced matcha green tea latte from Starbucks I would highly recommend it.

  7. Hey Genevieve! So I never actually knew what matcha was so thank you for explaining! So where is the best place to get matcha near campus in your opinion? I have always been one to grab a cup of black coffee from wherever and call it a day. However, now that you mention not having the crash I think I might look into it! Thank you for that!
